Steel wire rope is constructed by laying multiple individual wires into strands, then laying those strands around a core — fibre (FC), wire-strand (WSC) or independent wire-rope (IWRC). Construction designations like 6×36 mean six outer strands, each containing 36 wires.

The most common lay. Resists kinking and untwisting, easy to handle, and more crush-resistant than Lang lay.

Better abrasion resistance, flexibility and fatigue life than regular lay — but more prone to kinking and untwisting.
